Ari Jónsson, a successful lawyer, is unexpectedly appointed defence council in what looks like an open-and-shut murder case. The victim is an elderly art collector who had been brutally assaulted in his home and left for dead. The suspect, Jói, is a homeless drug addict with a long trail of convictions.

Ari is surprised to discover that his client has a sister, Milla, who comes to Iceland from Copenhagen, where she lives, to rally to her brother’s side. Milla is convinced he’s innocent. She discovers that the victim’s business partner had left the country just a few hours after the attack, and with Ari’s help, sets about unravelling their shady past.

Ari’s admiration of the strong-minded young woman gives way to growing doubts about what’s actually motivating her quest. Eventually he is left to grapple with the mystery of who Milla really is and the true nature of her connection to the murdered man.

Anna Th. Rögnvaldsdóttir started out as a Production Designer in TV and feature films. She has written and directed historical docu-dramas for the National Broadcaster in Iceland as well as short fiction films.

This story was born in the courthouse one day, as I watched scores of petty criminals come before the judge. Every one of them had dozens of prior convictions: theft, burglary, every possible kind of drug offense. Many looked vaguely familiar, the members of the faceless army ever-present on the streets, faces lined with worry about where their next hit is going to come from. When I met Jón Saemundur, an Art School graduate and designer of a hip fashion line, I knew I had found the man who could play Jói convincingly, and at the same time give the character individuality and some heart.
Actors are my muse. I go to the theatre to watch actors rather than plays. What actors do with the roles they play - and what they don’t do - is an endless source of wonderment to me, a mine of ideas. Writing is a very lonely occupation. Lonely children have imaginary friends to play with; to stay sane I have imaginary dialogue with actors when I write.
